The three card types in user flows

  1. A screen (you can add existing ones from your sitemap, or add new ones),
  2. an action (like "User clicks on email link"), 
  3. or a decision point (like "Choose a payment option").

While not a card type, there is a fourth primary action available as you build your user flow – linking two cards together. This is explained below.

Screens

Screens (previously known as pages) are the screens that your app or site has – like home, dashboard, log in, and more. These are the same ones you use in your sitemap and are synced across user flows and sitemaps.

Actions

Actions are things your users need to do as they use your product. These can be within the app or site, or outside of it. For example, "clicked the purchase button", or "verification email sent". 

Decision points

Decision points are the times when you make a user on your site or app choose a path. For example "pay with credit card or PayPal" or "sign up or log in?". Decision points (or too many choices) are often the cause of friction, and if overused, can result in frustrated users, lower conversion rates, and less engagement. 

Linking cards in the user flow
In addition to three the types of cards, there is a fourth action within user flows: Creating an outbound link from one card to another card already in the user flow. 

This lets you branch out the flow at decision points, and if required, loop it back to an existing card. This is useful when users take a separate path for a few steps, then loop back into the same flow, or when the same flow repeats multiple times.
